McNally’s three-point afternoon paces Gold Miners to victory
BLIND RIVER, Ont. – Connor McNally tallied twice and added an assist to help propel the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a 5-2 victory over the Blind River Beavers Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Blind River Recreation Centre.
The visiting Gold Miners blasted their way to a 3-0 lead after one period getting markers from Anthony Duquette, McNally and Joey Ftoma, who slammed home a power play goal with 53 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
Blind River bounced back in the middle session getting an early effort from Tyler Shanush as well as a late strike by Tyson MacLeod to make it a one-goal contest after 40 minutes.
Kirkland Lake used special teams to put the game away in the third as McNally supplied his second of the day, scoring shorthanded at the 5:40 mark while Steven Babin rounded out the Miners’ offensive production with a man advantage effort in the late stages.
Royce King dished out two assists to aid the Kirkland Lake cause.
Chris Komma turned in a 37-save performance to record the victory helping his side improve to 4-3-0-1 on the season.
Brandon Currie faced 36 pucks in a losing cause as the Beavers saw their record slip to 2-6-0-1.
NOJHL play resumes Wednesday as the league-leading Sudbury Nickel Barons put their 8-0 start on the line as they host the defending NOJHL and Dudley-Hewitt Cup champion Soo Thunderbirds (4-1-1-1) at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff. The opening face-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
